The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson, is one of the most notable books in the psychological horror genre.  Even famed author, Stephen King, described it as “the greatest haunted house story ever written.”

The short story begins with Dr. Montague, who is obsessed with proving the existence of the supernatural.  He decides to conduct an experiment in Hill House using live subjects – or assistants, as he insists on calling them –, which includes Eleanor and Theodora, who are emotionally unstable, and Luke, who is the nephew of the owner of Hill House.  As the story progresses, the relationships between the assistants and Dr. Montague become tense, and everyone becomes increasingly delirious.  For instance, Eleanor begins to feel that she has a personal connection with the house and that they – Eleanor and the house – can hear everyone else moving about.

What makes Jackson’s short story so unique to many other horror stories, and especially unique compared to most horror films, is that it does not rely on jump-scares or gruesomeness.  One cannot know for certain whether the house is haunted, or if its inhabitants are simply insane.  It causes the reader to become afraid in an emotional and mental way, making this book a fantastic read for anyone looking for a different means of frightening themselves this Halloween.
