Skyview High School is known for our excellent sporting teams and for the many students who get to take that huge step forward and sign with colleges to play their sports. But, after they leave, we never hear of them again. So, I reached out to a former Skyview High School student, Walker Ray. Last year, Walker signed with Carroll College in Helena, Montana to play football.

It is obvious that high school and college are two very different atmospheres.  The first thing I asked Walker was what the transition from high school to college is like:  he answered, “The biggest thing that you’re going to recognize first is your sense of freedom. You’re the one that makes your own rules. So the deciding factor is what you want as an individual and how that plays out is what you make of yourself. If you hold yourself to a high standard, then you’ll make the right decisions.”

From the athletic standpoint, Walker says, “Athletically the biggest change is competition. If you’re good enough to play, you’re going to play. It’s all about dedication and the willingness to put the effort forward. Balancing school and sports at the college level is very difficult because you’re by yourself and don’t have your parents breathing down your neck. So it’s all on you.”

Next, I asked him if he had any advice for the high school athletes that aspire to go to the next level; his answer was simple: “Never give up.”

Walker told me that he never once thought that  he’d get to go play at the collegiate level. However, with that, he reminds us, “If you want it bad enough and are willing to sacrifice time and effort then it’s all worth it in the end.”  As we see many athletes aspiring to go to the next level, we can only hope for the best for our Skyview alumni.
